Haaland negotiates Manchester City exit clause: how much?
Erling Braut Haaland is believed to have negotiated a Manchester City get-out clause that would take effect in the third year of his contract.
Manchester City’s pursuit of Erling Braut Haaland, whose summer arrival at the Etihad Stadium was confirmed on Tuesday, took months to bring to completion, amid competition from other major clubs. City Football Group’s chief operations officer, Omar Berrada, and City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, led the club’s chase of Haaland superbly, creating a close rapport with the player and his father, former City midfielder Alf-Inge, that finally saw them persuade the Borussia Dortmund striker to join. Despite the number of clubs queuing up to sign the 21-year-old, City played their cards just right, handling the transfer with real acumen.
Haaland’s Man City transfer fee and annual salary
For City, Haaland’s transfer fee can also be considered a win. AS understands that the Premier League champions will pay Dortmund a 60-million-euro buyout figure, rather than the 75m that had previously been reported. The release clause the Norwegian agreed with Dortmund has enabled him to leave the Bundesliga club for a very reasonable price, considering that his real market value is closer to 200m. City will also pay an agent’s fee and a commission to Alf-Inge, totalling around 30m.
Haaland’s salary is another key point of interest in the deal. City will pay the player 20m euros after tax per season, making him the fourth-best paid men’s footballer in the world. In truth, the other clubs chasing Haaland were offering him similar pay packets, so his choice of City is not driven by purely financial motives. The chance to spearhead a project, plus the emotional pull of joining the club his father played for, were major factors. On top of that, Pep Guardiola’s presence in Manchester is a draw for the forward. Just as Guardiola as enthusiastic about Haaland’s arrival, the player is attracted by the chance to work with the City head coach.
Haaland agrees City exit clause
German newspaper Bild has revealed, meanwhile, that Haaland’s City contract will also include a get-out clause that would come into play in the third year of his five-year deal at the Etihad. According to Bild, the clause would allow Haaland to leave City for 150m euros; however, AS sources indicate that the figure is higher than that - around 200m.
