How Group B looks after two games

Mexico are already through with the final space set to be resolved on Sunday night,

A solid second performance saw Mexico bag three goals and overcome a solid Haiti side who failed to maintain their composure and solid defensiveness that the Grenadiers displayed in the first 45 minutes. 

Goals from Henry Martin, and og from Adé and a late third from in form forward Santi Gimenez were enough for El Tri to secure the win with Jacques on target for Haiti with a powerful header which added a little frisson to the contest when it seemed that a Mexico win was a mere formality.

Mexico advance and Haiti are in a solid position too with three points from the opening day win over Qatar.

Certainly room for improvement from Mexico but one can see a team improving under a new head coach.

With the win and 6 points from six, Mexico are the first team to officially advance to the 2023 Gold Cup Round of 16. 

The whistle sounds and Mexico advance to the Round of 16 with a 3-1 win with all the goals coming in the second half.

With 20 minutes gone, the game is going according to plan with El Tri dominant in possession and Haiti looking to strike on the counter.

The teams are on the pitch led by tonight's match official Walter Lopez (Guatemala) as the national anthems of both participating sides are played at the State Farm Stadium.

The players are in the tunnel as a quick scan of the stadium suggests that there are approximately 40,000 fans in attendance at the 67,000 stadium.

Haiti in red for Mexico clash

The Grenadiers will play in red tonight in Phoenix and not blue as was initially thought.

Confirmation that kick-off will be in 15 minutes. 

A start of 7:16 (pm) PT will see the action underway at the State Farm Stadium in Arizona with 99% of the fans packed into the home of the Arizona Cardinals supporting Mexico.

The armband forms part of Concacaf's campaign to avoid discriminatory behaviour from fans attending Gold Cup games with Mexico fans securing fines from FIFA at the recent Qatar 2022 World Cup for homophobic chanting.

Haitian Spanish manager Gabriel Pellegrino Calderon has named his side to face Mexico in Arizona as Frantzdy Pierrot, the late goal hero for the Caribbean nation in their win over Qatar in the opening game very much the danger man for the Grenadiers.

The winners of Group B are set to face a Group C team in the Round of 16 with that group featuring: Costa Rica, Panama, Martinique and El Salvador. A game against the Group C second placed side awaits the winners of Group B with the second placed team in Group set to play the table toppers in Group C.

The Haitian FA advertising the kick-off at 7:15 pm (PT) but previous experience tells us that it may be an additional 15 minutes after this time. Why, oh why do they not stick to the generally published kick-0ff time ?

A win affording the victor with a place in R16

Both Haiti and Mexico recorded wins in their 2023 Gold Cup opening games as the Central American island nation delivering a shock and beating guest nation Qatar with a 2-1 win. 

Meanwhile, interim boss Jimmy Lozano got off to a bright start as his El Tri put four past Honduras in a very one sided contest.

Mexico set to spot new shirt

Mexico will wear this new white and green shirt for the first time today as they face Haiti with the jersey initially being designed for the women's team. 

The stadium is home to the NFL side Arizona Cardinals and is expected to draw a decent crowd with fans of El Tri seemingly having forgiven the Mexico national team for their poor showing in the recent Concacaf Nations League showing where they were humbled 3-0 by the USMNT. A result that led to the dismissal of manager Diego Cocca.   

The action at the State Farm Stadium is scheduled for a 7:00 (pm) kick-off with the game itself actually expected a 30 minutes after this published time.
