Hansi Flick will remain in his position as Germany head coach despite his side’s dismal performance at the World Cup, the DFB said in a statement on Wednesday.

Flick received criticism after Germany were knocked out of the 2022 World Cup in the group stage in Qatar.

Team director Oliver Bierhoff has agreed to leave the Germany setup two years before his contract ends.

“We are all convinced that Euro 2024 in our own country represents a great opportunity for football in Germany. Our goal is to make this tournament a sporting success. We have full confidence in Hansi Flick,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf in a statement.

“With regard to Oliver Bierhoff’s successor, we have agreed that we will first discuss the future structure of this position within the DFB and then make a personnel decision.”

Flick looking forward

After the DFB announced that they have full confidence in the 57-year-old, Flick said: “My coaching staff and I are optimistic about the European Championship in our own country. As a team, we can achieve a lot more than we showed in Qatar. We missed a great opportunity there. We will learn our lessons from that.

“I have faith in the joint path agreed today with Bernd Neuendorf and Hans-Joachim Watzke. We all want the whole of Germany to gather behind the national team again at the home European Championship in 2024.”

Group E failure

Germany lost to Japan, drew with Spain and beat Costa Rica in Group E but it was La Roja and Japan who advanced from the group to the last 16 of the tournament.

The Germans also failed to advance past the round of 16 at Euro 2020.

All four countries in Group E have since been dumped out of the World Cup, with Spain losing to Morocco on penalties on Tuesday.
