New Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou gave his first press conference since taking over the Premier League side on Monday.

It was the Australian manager’s first chance to speak directly with the English press and he showed a glimpse of the sense of humour that ingratiated himself with Celtic fans.

At the first mention of the name ‘Harry Kane’ in his inaugural Spurs presser conference, Postecoglou joked: “Question three is Harry [Kane]... We were running a pool with the coaches.”

He continued: “I think Mile Jedinak won actually. I had over six (questions) because I thought you’d care more about me than Harry.”

But after that light-hearted start, Postecoglou conceded that there could be major changes in the Spurs squad this summer.

“In terms of the squad, the reason I’m here is because the club is seeking change. Change in direction, change in the way that we do things. That usually transpires in a change of personnel with the squad,” he said.

“I’m trying to tick off, one by one, the path forward for us. What are squad is going to look like may take a little while.”

Postecoglou will give Kane his “vision” for Spurs

For the past decade Harry Kane has been central to Tottenham’s hopes of success. Last season he struck 30 Premier Leagues in a poor Spurs side, becoming their all-time record goal scorer earlier this year.

But with his 30th birthday approaching at the end of July, there is an acceptance between both parties that this could be Kane’s last chance at a big money move to one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Bayern Munich have tabled two bids already this summer, while Real Madrid and Manchester United have also expressed an interest in recent months. Faced with a dilemma regarding the team’s superstar, Postecoglou insisted that Kane would be getting no special treatment.

“I don’t think it’s my role to sit there and sort of treat people in a manner because of their circumstances,” Postecoglou said.

“I’m really big on treating everyone the same. Harry is someone who has already entrenched themselves in the history of this football club and he’s very important... He’s one of the premier strikers in the world and I want him involved here. My conversation will be about how we can make this club successful.”

“I’ve got no doubt that’s what he wants as well. Within that context, whatever the personal stuff that surrounds Harry as an individual, if the conversation takes it that way, we’ll take it that way but I doubt it’s going to be defined in the manner that people think it’s going to be.”

Postecoglou will be eager to keep him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and said that he is willing to listen to Kane’s thoughts on the direction of the club going forward.

“What I want is to introduce myself to Harry, to give him my vision for the club, to get an understanding from him about what he thinks this club needs to be successful, and then get out on that training pitch to try to make it happen.”
