Have Carlos Vela and LAFC reached a contract agreement?

The Mexico international signed a contract extension with the Los Angeles-based team as a Designated Player and will play through the 2023 season.

Carlos Vela’s current contract expires on 30 June, which meant that his last game could have been against FC Dallas at the Banc of California stadium. Los Angeles FC wanted the attacking player to commit to a new contract before the Mexico international became a free agent during the start of the summer transfer window.

After months of negotiations LAFC and Carlos Vela have reached a contract extension agreement that will run through the 2023 Major League Soccer season, according to journalist Taylor Twellman. The 33-year-old will remain as a Designated Player with LAFC and continue to try and help the team win the MLS Cup.

I think we created a really good team, we are doing pretty well,” said Vela last week when LAFC tied against Seattle. “I feel good to be here. I enjoy to play in LA with our fans. And of course I have that thing in mind, to win a trophy with this club. So my head is always focused on that.”

Vela to play alongside Gareth Bale

This is good news for LAFC because they are building a strong team under the salary cap. LAFC confirmed the acquisition of Giorgio Chiellini last week and they are on the verge of signing Gareth Bale, who is arriving as a free agent, but not as a Designated Player.
