Ciudad de México Update:

Mexico continued their preparations for this summer’s World Cup with a comfortable 4–0 win over Iceland in Querétaro on Wednesday night.

Richard Ledezma, Armando “Hormiga” González, Jesús Gallardo, and Brian Gutiérrez found the net for Javier Aguirre’s team in a dominant performance which will allay some of the coach’s concerns about how many goals his team is scoring.

On the plus side, it’s another four-goal victory - a feat El Tri have managed only once before during Aguirre’s third stint as national team coach.

The previous 4-0 scoreline came on November 19, 2024, at Estadio Nemesio Diez in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal, when Mexico fired four past Honduras without reply.

Aguirre’s record with Mexico

Big wins haven’t been common for Aguirre’s Mexico — scoring more than two goals has been a challenge. Aside from the two 4–0 results, the only other lopsided victory came in Aguirre’s debut on September 7, a 3–0 win over New Zealand with goals from Orbelín Pineda, César “Chino” Huerta, and Luis Romo.

On the flip side, Mexico has also suffered two heavy defeats: a 2–4 loss to Switzerland and a 0–4 setback against Colombia.

During his 24 games in charge, Mexico have chalked 14 wins and scored a total of 36 goals - an average of 1.5 goals per game. In five of those games, the team didn’t manage to find the net at all.

Aguirre’s biggest strength right now: his forwards

If there’s a bright spot for Aguirre heading into a crucial World Cup cycle, it’s the form of his attackers:

  1. Germán Berterame, recently signed by Inter Miami in MLS
  2. Julián Quiñones, battling for the scoring title in Saudi Arabia
  3. Raúl Jiménez, steady and productive with Fulham in the Premier League
  4. Santiago Giménez, currently injured but an important striker for AC Milan

With that kind of firepower, Mexico’s offensive outlook is far more encouraging than in past cycles.

Next up: Portugal in Mexico City

Mexico will be back in action on March 28, when they face Portugal in Mexico City — a high‑profile test as the countdown to the 2026 World Cup continues.
