He starred at the World Cup - and now Mora is the hero once again
Making his comeback from World Cup duty with Mexico, Gilberto Mora was the match winner in Tijuana’s Apertura 2026 clash with León.
On his return from World Cup duty, Gilberto Mora needed only a few minutes to become the difference-maker for Club Tijuana, as the Xolos secured a 1-0 victory over León on matchday two of the Apertura 2026 tournament.
The young midfielder came off the bench in the second half, won a penalty, and calmly converted it himself to earn all three points for his side at Estadio Caliente.
A first half lacking a finishing touch
The match began at a high tempo, but neither team could find the quality needed in front of goal. León created the first dangerous opportunities, highlighted by a Juan Guevara header that sailed wide, while Jordi Cortizo also tested the defense from inside the box.
The clearest chance of the half came in the 40th minute, when Tijuana was awarded a penalty after Adonis Preciado was brought down in the area. However, León goalkeeper Óscar García came up with the save, preserving the scoreless draw heading into halftime.
Mora changes the course of the match
After the break, head coach Sebastián Abreu reshuffled his lineup and brought on Mora, a move that proved decisive. León also made adjustments, but it was Tijuana’s rising youngster who changed the game, immediately displaying confidence and composure.
In the 52nd minute, Mora collected the ball inside the penalty area, beat his defender, and saw his shot strike the hand of Juan Guevara, earning another penalty for the hosts. Mora stepped up himself and confidently drilled his attempt down the middle to make it 1-0, marking his first appearance of the tournament with a goal.
Xolos hold out for win
Following Mora’s opener, León pushed for an equalizer, relying heavily on set pieces and winning a series of corner kicks. But the Xolos defense stood firm throughout. Despite efforts from Edgar Guerra and Fernando Beltrán, León was unable to find a breakthrough.
In the closing stages, Tijuana tightened up defensively and managed the game effectively, securing its second win of the tournament after previously defeating Tigres. León, meanwhile, suffered its second straight defeat after opening the campaign with a loss to Atlas, leaving the club facing an uphill battle early in the Apertura 2026 campaign.
