Despite having game time with Atlético Madrid, midfielder Héctor Herrera left European football for Major League Soccer to play for Houston Dynamo. The 2022 World Cup is approaching and the midfielder has the confidence of Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino, making him likely to feature at this winter’s World Cup with the Mexico national team.

The 32-year-old could retire from the national team at the end of this World Cup. The former Porto player also admitted that he is looking forward to playing a good role in Qatar to help the national team achieve its objectives.

“I hope it goes well for me personally and collectively better because that way it goes well for all of us. After the World Cup we’ll see if we continue or not. I’m delighted to continue in the national team, I’m going to give everything I have to the national team as long as I see that I can continue to contribute and be important, and if not, then maybe I can help in another way. We’ll see what happens,” said the Houston player in an interview with TUDN.

“The main thing is to be able to get to the World Cup in the best possible way and to be able to have a great World Cup. I am very excited, I look and feel good,” he explained. Regarding injuries, he admitted he can be nervous.

World Cup nerves

“The truth is that it does worry you because many injuries are happening because you are competing a lot. There are many games, a lot of wear and tear, but it’s football and it is what it is. You have to adapt and take care of yourself in order to arrive as well as possible. The truth is that you do get nervous because the World Cup is just around the corner,” he added.

In the meantime, the Mexican national team will be active during this international break, where they will face Peru and Colombia. It is expected that in the coming weeks coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino will announce his final squad for Qatar 2022.
