Henry Martín has been honoured with three Golden Balls from Liga MX President Mikel Arriola to mark his extraordinary performances last season.

The Mexican striker has been recognised as the Best Player, Best Goalscorer and Best Forward of the Clausura 2023. He scored 14 goals in 17 appearances for America last season, contributing a further five assists.

On Wednesday Arriola met with Martín at Coapa, Club America’s training ground, to present Martín with the three awards. Children from the América soccer academy were invited to the event and wore masks with Martín’s face.

At 30 years old Martín is widely regarded as one of the top players in Mexico and regularly wears the captain’s armband for his team. In accepting the award Martín paid tribute to the club, his teammates and the fans for their support.

He said: “Thanks for all this go to Santiago [Baños], Héctor [González Iñárritu] for making this possible. To all the fans present, the youth team and the group, thank you very much. There awards would not have been possible if it were not for you. I love you very much.”

It was a perfect sweep for Martín on a personal level, but the team fell short of their objective in the playoffs. América reached the semi-finals but were beaten by Chivas Guadalajara.

Martín added: “It would have been great to have achieved this and the league championship, but soccer is about revenge. Fortunately the Mexican league is every six months, now our only objective is to lift that trophy, our 14th. "

“We have a very solid, very complete team, we are doing things very well and if we continue like this we are a very strong candidate to lift it.”

Águilas now now preparing for their next Liga MX fixture, a trip to Mazatlán on Friday.
