DC United have revealed that goalkeeper Bill Hamid will be out for the next two to three months after having an operation on a hand injury.

Goalkeeper out of action since late May

Hamid “underwent hand surgery on June 30 to repair the small finger radial collateral ligament at the metacarpophalangeal joint with internal brace augmentation”, the MLS franchise said in a statement on Friday.

The 31-year-old, who has won eight caps for the US men’s national team, last played for DC United on 28 May, in a 4-1 defeat to the New York Red Bulls.

According to the team, Hamid suffered the injury in the early stages of the season and had been playing through the pain.

Hamid poised to sit out most of 2022 regular season

The timeline offered by United indicates he may miss almost all of the rest of the 2022 regular season, which concludes on 9 October. The playoffs then begin on 15 October, with the MLS Cup final scheduled for 5 November.

Having been thrashed 7-0 by the Philadelphia Union on Friday evening, United currently sit 13th in the 14-team MLS Eastern Conference, eight points adrift of the New England Revolution in the final playoff place.

Although they are MLS’s second-most successful franchise with four league championships, United last won the title back in 2004, and are battling to avoid a third straight season without making the playoffs.
