Marcus Rashford has emerged as a fundamental player for Manchester United this season. He is having the best season of his career and is just two goals away from becoming the first player to reach 30 goals in a single season since Sir Alex Ferguson’s left the club.

The promise, despite doubts and injuries in recent seasons, is now a reality. Like United as a whole, the English forward has grown in confidence and character since the arrival of Erik ten Hag last summer. Only Erling Haaland, with 44 goals, and Kylian Mbappé, with 31, have scored more goals than Rashford this season in Europe’s top five leagues.

The problem, if having someone so in-form can be considered as such a thing, is that United have grown accustomed to relying on Rashford. He has scored the winning goal in 10 Premier League games this season, something no one at the club has managed since Wayne Rooney in the 2009-10 campaign

Rashford plays part in win over Everton

Scott McTominay opened the scoring in the 36th minute against Everton on Saturday, and Anthony Martial wrapped the game up, scoring 20 minutes from time. The assist for Martial’s goal came from Rashford. United’s attacking options haven’t hit the heights the club would have liked. Forwards Antony and Wout Weghorst have struggled in front of goal and Jadon Sancho spent time away from the squad.

Rashford goes off injured

Rashford was substituted on Saturday after picking up a knock and it remains to be seen how much club action he will miss but United could now face a spell without their main forward. “There are things you can’t avoid, but this was avoidable,” Ten Hag said after the game. “Why does the Premier League put us on as the last game on Sunday and then the first game on Saturday? I can’t say much about it, we will have to wait. I replaced him, but we have to wait for the diagnosis.”
