Liverpool produced an impressive display against Villarreal to come back from two goals down at La Cerámica on Tuesday.

Villarreal, who had the Reds on the ropes in the first half, led 2-0 at half-time, but the Premier League side fought back to win 2-3 on the night and 2-5 on aggregate.

Substitute Luis Díaz was a pivotal part of Liverpool’s second half performance, scoring one and causing constant trouble for the Villarreal backline with his dynamism.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are still chasing a quadruple this year and they will play the winner of Real Madrid and Manchester City in the Champions League final in Paris on 28 May.

How many European finals have Liverpool been in?

The European Cup began in the 1955/56 season. It then became known as the Champions League in the 1992/93 campaign.

Liverpool have appeared in nine European finals, in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 1985, 2005, 2007, 2018 and 2019.

The 2021/22 final will be their tenth European final. Since Klopp arrived in 2015/16, the German coach has guided the club to three Champions League finals.

How many times have Liverpool won the European Cup/Champions League?

Liverpool have won Europe’s premier competition on six occasions. Their first title arrived in 1977, and just a year later in 1978, the Merseysiders had their second.

In the 1980s, Liverpool won European silverware in 1981 and 1984. Over two decades later, in 2005, Rafa Benitez led the Reds to a famous Istanbul comeback against AC Milan. Number six came when Klopp’s side beat fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 final in Madrid.

Only Real Madrid (13), who can still win this year’s competition, and AC Milan (7) have won it on more occasions than Liverpool. German giants Bayern Munich have also won Europe’s most coveted trophy six times. Barcelona are next on the list of title winners and have won it five times.
