Club América’s 2-1 win over Necaxa on Saturday saw Las Águilas equal the sequence of nine straight victories registered by Toluca in the Clausura 2018 - a streak which, in the end, was not enough to earn Los Diablos Rojos the Liga MX championship, as they lost the final to Santos Laguna.

But above and beyond the question of whether América can go on to be crowned champions of the Apertura 2022, the reality is that Fernando Ortiz’s men demonstrated the great form they are in by beating Necaxa despite missing five members of their regular starting line-up. Most notably, captain and first-choice goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa did not travel to Aguascalientes, understudy Óscar Jiménez deputising for the 37-year-old.

América make club history with Necaxa win

América have now set a new club record for consecutive wins, surpassing the eight they recorded in the 1993-94 season under Miguel Ángel López, and in the Verano 1997 tournament under Jorge Solari.

Club América’s nine straight wins:

  • 8 August: América 2-1 Juárez
  • 14 August: Pumas 0-3 América
  • 18 August Pachuca 0-3 América
  • 21 August: América 7-0 Cruz Azul
  • 24 August: Querétaro 0-1 América
  • 27 August: Mazatlán 1-3 América
  • 4 September: América 2-1 Tigres
  • 7 September: América 3-0 Atlético San Luis
  • 10 September: Necaxa 1-2 América

Double figures, all-time record in América’s sights

América will now look to emulate the 10 consecutive victories recorded by Cruz Azul in 1971-72, a season in which La Máquina won the first of three straight championships. The Apertura 2022 leaders’ next game is a rearranged week-five clash at home to Santos Laguna on Wednesday 14 September.

If América beat the team from Coahuila, they will remain on course to equal the all-time Liga MX record of 12 wins in a row. So far, three clubs have managed such a streak: Necaxa in the 1931-32 and 1934-35 seasons; León in the Clausura 2019; and Cruz Azul in the Guardianes tournament in 2021.
