How many divisions are there in the English Football League?

The EFL Championship (level 2), one of the most competitive leagues in the world, is below the Premier League and is contested by 24 clubs.

The Premier League is the highest division of professional football in England. Below the Premier League is the English Football League (EFL), which is divided into three divisions.

The Premier League, sometimes referred to as Level 1, contains 20 clubs. The EFL Championship (level 2), one of the most competitive leagues in the world, is below the Premier League and is contested by 24 clubs.

There are 24 clubs in League One (level 3). Each club plays every other club twice (once at home and once away). There are also 24 clubs in League Two (level 4).

Including the Premier League, there are 92 clubs full-time professional clubs in England. They are often referred to as ‘League’ clubs because. Clubs outside this group of 92 are referred to as ‘non-League’ clubs.

Promotion and relegation rules for Football League

Championship

The Championship is England’s second highest division and the Football League’s highest division. Before the invention of the Premier League in 1992, it was called Division Two, with its name changing to The Football League First Division from 1992-2004.

The top two teams are automatically promoted to England’s top flight. The next four compete in the playoffs, with the winner gaining the third promotion spot. The bottom three sides are relegated to League One.

League One

The top two teams are automatically promoted to the Championship. The next four compete in playoffs, with the winner gaining the third promotion spot. The bottom four are relegated to League Two.

League Two

The top three teams are automatically promoted to League One. The next four compete in playoffs, with the winner gaining the fourth promotion spot. The bottom two are relegated out of the Football League.
