How many goals has Alex Morgan scored for San Diego in 2022?
Since joining San Diego in December, Alex Morgan has already beaten her best-ever season return and the number of goals that won the 2021 Golden Boot.
Alex Morgan signed for the San Diego Wave last December and has taken the NWSL by storm after her return to the division. The US international, who has 115 goals for her country, is on course to smash records in the NWSL after scoring 11 times in her first 10 league games. Including the cup, Morgan has scored 15 in 16 appearances, the same number she managed over 38 games for the Portland Thorns between 2013 and 2015.
Morgan joined San Diego after returning to NWSL after a brief stint at Tottenham following the birth of her child in May 2020. And the US international has been unstoppable since. The 32-year-old scored four on 8 May against Gotham, two on 5 June against Kansas City and put two more past Gotham FC last Sunday, to add to strikes against Chicago Red Stars, North Carolina Courage and OL Reign.
Morgan beats last year’s Golden Boot in 13 fewer games
No player in NWSL history has ever scored 20 goals in a season, not even the division’s all-time top scorer, Sam Kerr, who bagged 77 in total during her career in the USA. Morgan’s 11 would have won her the NWSL Golden Boot last season, which was claimed by Washington Spirit’s Ashley Hatch with 10. Morgan has matched that mark in 13 fewer games and is seven short of Kerr’s single-season record of 18.
Kerr won the top scoring honor the previous three seasons with Chicago and Sky Blue FC, scoring 18, 16 and 17 times. In 2016, Western New York Flash striker Lynn Williams hit the back of the net 11 times to win the Golden Boot.
Morgan eyeing NWSL history
Morgan’s scoring streak has also powered up the all-time charts. She now stands ninth in the scoring charts with 38, one behind Amy Rodriguez and two short of Megan Rapinoe’s 40. Eight more goals this season will put her into the top five, above Christen Press (45) and behind Jessica McDonald (51) in fourth.
Morgan has already surpassed her best-ever return for a single season, which she set at Lyon in 2016-17 when she hit 12 in all competitions.
