CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
How many goals has Haaland scored in the Champions League?
Since his Champions League debut with RB Salzburg in 2019, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has racked up a host of tournament records.
Erling Haaland drew a blank in both legs of Manchester City’s semi-final triumph over Real Madrid, but the striker still has comfortably more Champions League goals than appearances to his name. Haaland heads into Saturday’s final against Inter Milan having scored 35 times in 29 career Champions League games.
The Norwegian racked up eight in six for Austrians RB Salzburg in 2019/20, before netting 15 in 13 in two and a half seasons at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. Since his summer move to City, Haaland has added 12 in 10 in Europe’s premier club competition.
Flying up the UCL all-time goal rankings
Still just 22, he boasts an overall goal return that places him 18th in the all-time Champions League charts, level with Edinson Cavani. Cavani, though, needed 70 tournament appearances to reach that figure. Haaland is five short of Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappé in 17th.
Haaland’s lightning-quick goal rate in the Champions League has seen him break a number of competition records. While at Salzburg, for example, he became the first teenager to score in five straight Champions League appearances. What’s more, he has needed fewer appearances than any other player to reach the following scoring milestones: 10 goals (seven games), 15 goals (12 games), 20 goals (14 games), 25 goals (20 games), 30 goals (25 games) and 35 goals (27 games).
Emulates Messi, Adriano five-goal displays
Earlier this season, Haaland became just the third player to hit five goals in a single Champions League game, as City thumped RB Leipzig 7-0 in the last 16. Only Lionel Messi (for Barcelona against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012) and Luiz Adriano (for Shakhtar Donetsk against BATE Borisov in 2014) have also achieved the feat.
Single-season out of reach this year... probably
After helping to dispatch Leipzig, Haaland then took his 2022/23 total to 12 in City’s quarter-final win over Bayern Munich, at the time leaving himself well-placed to challenge Cristiano Ronaldo’s single-season goal record of 17. However, having been unable to score in either last-four leg against Madrid, Haaland now needs another five-goal haul in the final if he’s to equal Ronaldo’s 2013/14 goal return.
In all competitions this season, Haaland has scored 52 goals in 52 games, including a record 36 in the Premier League.
