Liga MX

How many Liga MX titles have Club América and Tigres won?

América and defending champions Tigres face off in the Apertura 2023 final, with both clubs out to further their status among the Liga MX’s all-time greats.

Update:
América and defending champions Tigres face off in the Apertura 2023 final, with both clubs out to further their status among the Liga MX’s all-time greats.

Club América and Tigres will fight it out for the Mexican title this week, in what is - on paper - one of the most closely-matched Liga MX finals in recent memory.

Las Águilas return to the trophy decider after four years away, and with their sights firmly set on a record 14th domestic championship; eight-time winners Tigres, meanwhile, will be out to seal back-to-back league titles.

América out to end wait to extend Liga MX record

América may be the most decorated club in Liga MX history, but the regular-season champions haven’t lifted the trophy for five years now. Their last league crown came in the Apertura 2018 tournament, when they saw off Cruz Azul in the final.

Since then, América have been runners-up once, semi-finalists three times, and quarter-finalists on no fewer than four occasions.

Should André Jardine’s men defeat Tigres in the Apertura 2023 final, they will move two clear of nearest challengers Chivas Guadalajara in the all-time Liga MX title charts.

América's 13 Liga MX titles so far

  • 1975-76
  • 1983-84
  • 1984-85
  • PRODE 1985
  • 1987-88
  • 1988-89

Tigres have sights set on Cruz Azul

In recent years, Tigres have staked an increasingly compelling claim to be considered on a par with Mexico’s traditional ‘big four’ - América, Chivas, Cruz Azul and Pumas.

Since 2011, Los Auriazules have won six league MX titles, in the process overtaking Pumas’ overall tally of seven.

If Robert Siboldi’s defending champions beat América to secure a ninth Liga MX trophy, they will draw level with Cruz Azul’s all-time haul.

That would leave Tigres behind only Toluca, Chivas and América on the list of the Mexican league’s most successful teams. They are the only three Liga MX clubs who have managed 10 or more domestic championships.

Tigres' eight Liga MX titles so far

  • 1977-78
  • 1981-82
  • Apertura 2011
  • Apertura 2015
  • Apertura 2016
  • Apertura 2017
