England - Switzerland. Penalties. The dreaded words neither set of fans wanted to hear at the end of 120 minutes of football. Knowing that their side’s fate rested on the luck (or skill!) of a penalty shoot-out.

France overcame Portugal last night in the penalty shootout, and, after playing out a 1-1 draw with Switzerland after extra-time, England headed into a shootout against Switzerland. And their goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was decisive, saving the first penalty of the shoot-out from Akanji to give England the advantage from the start of the shoot-out. And although he then failed to stop any of the next three penalties, the England penalty-takers did their job, scoring all five of their spot-kicks to send England into the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

What is Pickford’s penalty record?

The Everton shot stopper, originally from Washington in Tyne and Wear in the north east of the country, is not the greatest penalty saver out there. He’s faced a total of 62 penalties in standard play in his entire career and 54 of them were scored. That gives him a 12.9% stop rating. As a comparison Germany’s Neuer is rocking a 22% stop rating.

Check out how Switzerland’s Yann Sommer measures up in the penalty saving stakes.

Pickford in penalty shoot-outs

However Pickford has done better in shootouts. He saved from Carlos Bacca to allow Dier to score the winning penalty and send England past Colombia in the round of 16 at the 2018 World Cup.

Pickford then saved two penalties in the shoot out in the final of Euro 2020 against Italy, but alas for England his heroics weren’t enough, with Italy winning the shoot-out 3-2, with Rashford, Sancho and Saka missing their final three penalties. Pickford saved from Belotti and Jorginho, but Berardi, Bonucci and Bernadeschi all scored.
