Inter Miami have enjoyed a superb 2024 MLS season to date, quite the opposite of the previous one, when they did not even manage to qualify for the MLS Cup playoffs. However, with considerable help from Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, they are on course to win the Supporters’ Shield for the first time in their short history.

Messi is, of course, the jewel in The Herons’ crown. The Argentina captain returned to action last Saturday following a two-month injury absence, scoring twice and providing an assist in an MVP performance against Philadelphia Union.

In addition to securing a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs, head coach Gerardo Martino has made it clear that one of the team’s main goals is winning the Supporters Shield, given to the club from either conference that collects the most points during the 34-game regular season.

With just five matches left to play, the Floridians are almost there as they look to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet having lifted the 2023 League Cup a month after signing Messi.

Inter Miami currently lead the Eastern Conference with 63 points from 29 games, eight points more than second-placed FC Cincinnati. Their advantage is identical in the overall standings, with Marco Reus’ LA Galaxy also on 55 points, although they have played a game more.

Inter Miami’s remaining 2024 MLS regular season matches

  • New York City FC - Inter Miami | Saturday, September 21
  • Inter Miami - Charlotte FC | Saturday, September 28
  • Columbus Crew - Inter Miami | Wednesday, October 2
  • Toronto FC - Inter Miami | Saturday, October 5
  • Inter Miami - New England Revolution | Saturday, October 19

When can Messi and Inter Miami win the Supporters’ Shield?

With a five-point lead, winning the Supporters’ Shield is clearly in Inter Miami’s hands. And Martino’s men will be keen to ensure they finish top of the pile as soon as possible so they can get some rest ahead of the MLS Cup.

Las Garzas need to pick up nine points from their last five remaining fixtures to be totally assured of winning the Supporters’ Shield, although that is only if Columbus Crew, who have 53 points from 28 games, collect maximum points from the game they have left. Ironically, they will collect the trophy if they defeat the Crew in Columbus on Wednesday, October 2, provided they have already beaten New York City FC and Charlotte FC.

How many points do Inter Miami need to break the MLS regular season record?

New England Revolution hold the record for most points in a 34-game MLS regular season, amassing 73 in 2021. Inter Miami, currently on 63, therefore need 10 points from the last 15 available to tie, and 11 to take the record outright.
