How many times has England made it to the final in the Women’s World Cup?

England, who play Spain in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday 20 August at Stadium Australia in Sydney, will be playing in their first ever Women’s World Cup final after beating Australia 3-1 in the semi-final. Spain are also in their first World Cup final.

England’s record in the Women’s World Cup

This is England’s sixth Women’s World Cup - they failed to qualify for three of the previous eight editions (1991,1993 and 2003). They reached the quarter-finals in 1995, 2007 and 2011. They came fourth in 2019, and had their previous high watermark in 2015, when they finished third, in Canada, losing to Japan in the semi-final, and beating Germany in the third place game.

England’s march to the final in 2023

Having won Euro 2022 as hosts, the Lionesses came into the World Cup with high hopes, and so far these have been fully realised, with the side unbeaten so far. They opened their account with a 1-0 win over Haiti in their opening game of the group stage, before shading Denmark 1-0 and thrashing China 6-1 to win their group.

In the second round they needed penalties (4-2) to squeak past Nigeria after drawing 0-0 after extra-time. Colombia loomed large in the quarter-finals but a 2-1 win, with goals from Hemp and Russo, took them into the semi-final against hosts Australia, who they beat with two late goals, again from Hemp and Russo, to triumph 3-1, Toone having got the opener.
