England joined the Netherlands, Argentina and France in the quarter finals at 2022 Qatar after beating Senegal 3-0 at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday evening.

Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka found the back of the net for the Lions, one of three teams who remain unbeaten at the tournament, along with the Netherlands and Croatia. It’s the second time running that England have made it past the first knockout round, they reached this stage at Russia 2018.

Bookmakers have England at +850 to make it all the way to the final and lift the trophy - a feat they have achieved just once, when they hosted the tournament in 1966. Since then they have come desperately close only to narrowly miss out. They were pipped to the final in 1990 and the last time around in Russia 2018, finishing in fourth place on both occasions.

The Lions’ forays into the latter stages of the World Cup have left us with some iconic moments - Geoff Hurst’s extra-time strike at Wembley, Gordon Banks’ impossible save from Pelé at Mexico 70, Maradona’s Hand of God, Ronaldinho curling one past Seaman from 35 yards out…

It’s now been 56 years of hurt that England have had to endure at the World Cup, and France now stand in the way of a place in the semis.
