How many times have Pachuca beaten Monterrey in Liga MX playoffs?
Pachuca remained dominant over Monterrey in short-tournament playoffs on Thursday, thumping Rayados 5-2 to move closer to the Apertura 2022 final.
Pachuca continued their recent dominance over Monterrey in the Liga MX playoffs, beating Rayados in a postseason game for the fifth time in the short-tournament era.
Pachuca close to Apertura 2022 final after Monterrey mauling
Guillermo Almada’s men put one foot in the Apertura 2022 final on Thursday, as Nicolás Ibáñez’s hat-trick at the Estadio Hidalgo helped the hosts to a 5-2 victory in the first leg of the sides’ semi-final tie. Romario Ibarra and Paulino de la Fuente were also on target for the six-time Mexican champions.
The win follows a quartet of Pachuca triumphs over Monterrey in Clausura 2016, Bicenentario 2010 and Verano 2001 clashes. Monterrey’s sole playoff win over Pachuca came in the first leg of the Apertura 2004 quarter-finals.
Pachuca’s history of dominance over Rayados
The teams’ first playoff meeting after the 1996 introduction of the short-tournament format came in the quarter-finals of the Verano 2001 championship, when Pachuca thrashed Rayados 4-0 in the opening leg, thanks to two goals by Manuel Vidrio, and one each by Césaro Victorino and Isaac Morales.
A 2-2 draw in the return saw Pachuca advance to the semi-finals, where they defeated Club América. However, Los Tuzos then went down 4-3 on aggregate to Santos Laguna in the final.
Nine years later, Pachuca registered their second and third victories over Monterrey in postseason games. Damián Álvarez’s strike earned a 1-0 win in the teams’ Clausura 2010 quarter-final first leg, before Edy Brambila and Luis Arturo Montes scored in a 2-1 second-leg triumph. Pachuca then fell short in the semis, suffering a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Toluca.
Playoff win number four arrived in the first leg of the Clausura 2016 final, Franco Jara’s goal setting Pachuca on their way to clinching their most recent Mexican title. A 1-1 draw in the return leg secured a 2-1 aggregate win for a team coached by Diego Alonso.
