Liverpool’s FA Cup victory finally handed Jürgen Klopp the one major national trophy on offer that he lacked as his Reds side remained in contention for an unprecedented English quadruple. Liverpool have now won the EFL Cup and the FA Cup this season – beating Chelsea on penalties on both occasions to compound a miserable few weeks for Thomas Tuchel’s side, who were eliminated in dramatic fashion by Real Madrid in the Champions League – and still have two fronts to compete one: Europe, where Klopp’s side will face Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid in the final, and the Premier League, where Liverpool need Manchester City to slip up to complete the set.

Klopp arrived at Anfield in 2015 after an eye-catching seven seasons at Borussia Dortmund, where he went toe-to-toe with Bavarian giants Bayern Munich and scooped two Bundesliga titles and a DFB-Pokal in a double-winning season, as well as a pair of German Super Cups.

Klopp restores Liverpool to their perch

When the German was appointed, the Premier League was the main priority. Sir Alex Ferguson had firmly dislodged the Reds from their perch during his reign at Old Trafford, to the extent that Liverpool had famously gone 30 years without winning the English top flight. Cup successes on both the European and English fronts had kept Liverpool relevant as a European powerhouse – the 2004-05 Champions League victory under Rafa Benítez chief among those triumphs – but there was a scratch that Klopp’s new side were unable to scratch. That historical inability to push themselves over the line was epitomized by Steven Gerrard’s slip against Chelsea and Liverpool’s subsequent implosion at Crystal Palace in 2013-14, which handed the advantage to eventual Manchester City.

Liverpool end 30-year top flight wait

Klopp was brought in to remedy an intrinsic domestic inferiority complex, instilled by Ferguson’s employment of the game’s fabled dark arts during his Old Trafford tenure, and the German delivered in 2019-20. And he did so in some style: Liverpool finished 18 points clear of Manchester City and 33 clear of third-placed United, losing just three games all season.

Now, Klopp has completed his set. Liverpool won the Champions League in 2018-19 but the FA Cup had eluded the German throughout his Liverpool career. Until Saturday, Klopp had not led Liverpool even to the final of the world’s oldest football competition. That he did so a few weeks after securing the not-quite-as-coveted EFL Cup makes this season even more remarkable for Liverpool and serves to cement Klopp’s record as one of the greatest managers of all time: Liverpool has not won the EFL Cup since 2012 and had not reached the final since 2016 in a competition City have dominated in recent years.
