El Tri begin their 2023 Gold Cup campaign on Sunday against Honduras. It will be the eighth time the two countries have met in the tournament.
This evening, Mexico begin their assault on the Gold Cup in the opening match of Group B against Honduras. After the recent disappointments at the World Cup and CONCACAF Nations League, El Tri will be aiming for better fortunes in the Gold Cup - a tournament in which their dominance has waned in recent years due to the growth of rivals such as the United States and Canada.
Since the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1991 edition, Mexico have played a total of 79 matches and registered 57 wins. This will be the eighth time that Mexico have faced Honduran in the Gold Cup - they go into tonight’s clash with a balance of four wins, two draws and one defeat in the previous seven matches of this rivalry. In all CONCACAF competitions, they have met 41 times, including World Cup qualifiers with 26 Aztec victories to six for the Catrachos.
Mexico find themselves in a moment of transition following the painful defeat to the United States in the Nations League semi-final. They ended up clinching third place but it cost Argentine coach Diego Cocca his job. Now, there is no excuse for his successor Jaime Lozano who must deliver at the Gold Cup - the last major tournament Mexico will play this year.

So the pressure will be on Mexico, who have been heavily criticized for the poor level of football level that it has shown for the past year and a half, and which brought with it resounding failures such as the World Cup Qatar 2022 and the Nations League.
That means that Mexico will have to draw on all of its resources to get something out of this competition as they seek their ninth Gold Cup title.
