How much has Chelsea spent during this transfer window, and how many players are in their squad?
The Blues will face Manchester City at Stamford Bridge in their first 2024/25 Premier League game.
The Premier League is back, and although Manchester United and Fulham will kick off things this Friday, the main attraction of matchday one will be the game between Chelsea and Manchester City on Sunday, August 18.
The Blues will start their new season at Stamford Bridge, and expectations are high since Todd Boehly, once again, decided to make some moves during the summer transfer window. Since the American businessman acquired the club in May 2022, player transfers have been a constant in the squad; fans still remember Chelsea’s 2022/23 season, when they spent a staggering $691 million, of which $132 million was spent on the Argentinian midfielder Enzo Fernández.
As if things were not enough for Boehly, the club signed Ecuatorian star Moises Caicedo for $149 million in the 2023/24 transfer window, making him the most expensive Premier League transfer ever. However, Chelsea didn’t look good last season, as they finished sixth in the table with 63 points and were left out of European competition spots. With the arrival of Italian coach Enzo Maresca for the upcoming season, Todd Boehly decided that it was that time of the year to refresh (if we can call it like that) the team once more, and, as expected, signings didn’t take long to arrive.
Which players has Chelsea signed during the summer?
It is worth highlighting that, compared to last season, Chelsea hasn’t spent that much on transfers, although the amount is still impressive for a squad that keeps growing. The club spent a total of $207 million, the most expensive signing being Portuguese star Pedro Neto ($65 million).
Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is another well-known name for Premier League fans. The 25-year-old player was a pillar in Marezca’s Leicester City, and once the Italian arrived at Chelsea, the club decided to spend $38.8 million to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
The other players that have arrived on the team are Filip Jørgensen (Goalkeeper/ from Villarreal), Omari Kellyman (Attacking Midfield/ from Aston Villa), Aarón Anselmino (Centre-Back/ from Boca Juniors), Renato Veiga (Defensive Midfielder/ from FC Basel), Caleb Wiley (Left-Back/ from Atlanta United), Marc Guiu (Striker/ from FC Barcelona) and Tosin Adarabioyo (Centre-Back/ from Fulham).
How many players are in Chelsea’s squad?
As shown on the club’s official website, 43 players are listed for Chelsea for the upcoming 2024/25 season! However, we have to consider that some names are not listed, as in the case of Aaron Anselmino, who is on loan in Boca Juniors until the end of the 2023/24 season.
Others, like Romelu Lukaku, Conor Gallagher, and Armando Broja, are still on the list but intend to leave the club before August 31. As of today, Chelsea has 55 players on the squad, including loanees! Below you can take a look at the list of them all.
Although a discussion has arisen about whether the squad is eligible to be registered in the league, everything indicates that the Blues will have no problem. The Premier League clubs must submit a 25-man list before August 31, with at least eight ‘homegrown’ players, but they can register as many Under-21 players as they like. This rule benefits Chelsea since some signings can be registered as Under-21s and not in the 25-man list, also considering the possible departures that will help shorten the names.
