Real Madrid clinched a record 14th European crown after beating Liverpool in Saturday’s Champions League final in Paris - the last game of the 2021/22. It denied Jürgen Klopp’s side what would have been their seventh title, and scotched their hopes of finishing the campaign with a cup treble, after securing the EFL Carabao Cup and FA Cup earlier this year.

Real Madrid do the double and in the process set a host of new club and individual records. Carlo Ancelotti became the first coach to win the Champions League four times (2002/3,2006/7 with AC Milan; 2013/14, 2021/22 with Madrid) while club captain Marcelo brings his time at the club to a close as the most decorated player in club history with 24 titles. Gareth Bale, who played a total of just seven minutes of Madrid’s European campaign and didn’t feature at all in the final, becomes the first British player to win five Champions League winners’ medals.

Apart from the silverware and historic records, reaching the final and winning it also comes with substantial financial rewards.

Champions League prize money

The two Champions League finalists in 2022 will each receive $17.5 million in prize money simply for reaching the final of the competition. The winner in Paris on Saturday is set to pick up an extra $5.1 million due to qualifying for August’s UEFA Super Cup, a one-off final which will pit Real Madrid, the recently-crowned European champions, against Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

For making the group stage alone, the 32 clubs involved this season each pocketed a minimum of $17.7 million. They were able to add to that amount with every win and draw in the six games that compose the group stage.

Champions League 2021-22: UEFA Prize money

Winner: $22.6M

Runner-up: $17.5M

Semi-finalists: $14.1M

Quarter-finalists: $12M

Round of 16: $10.8M

Group-stage wins: $3.1M

Group-stage draws: $1M

Group stage: $17.7M

So for winning the 2021/22 Champions League, Real Madrid will have collected a total of $82.2M in prize money throughout the tournament and have the chance to earn to a further $5.1 million if they win the Super Cup and could double that figure if they bring the Club World Cup home. So in total, Madrid could pocket between $90M and $93M as a consequence of beating Liverpool in Paris.
