Giorgio Scalvini is one of the most promising centre-backs in European soccer and his performances for Atalanta in Serie A haven’t gone unnoticed by some of the continent’s biggest clubs. The 20-year-old broke into the Italian side’s first team in 2021-22 and is now in his second season as a regular starter, although there is some suggestion he could be on the move before too long, with Real Madrid having targeted him as a potential recruit. According to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia, Atalanta have put a price tag of on €60 million ($65.75 million) on his head.

Despite his tender years, Scalvini has already been capped by the Italian national team on seven occasions since making his debut in June 2022. The youngster looks destined for bigger things at club level, although potential suitors will have to pay top dollar, with Scalvini under contract until 2028 and the Bergamo-based side not prepared to listen to offers below their asking price.

Scalvini one for the future for Madrid and United

Real Madrid have had serious selection problems in central defence this season, with Eder Militão and David Alaba both absent for several months after suffering anterior cruciate ligament tears. However, manager Carlo Ancelotti has surprisingly said he is not looking to strengthen at the back in the January transfer window, with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Dani Carvajal prepared to fill in at centre-back should Antonio Rüdiger or Nacho be unavailable.

Madrid therefore appear to be looking at Scalvini as one for the future, much like Manchester United. The Red Devils, who already paid Atalanta for €74 million ($81.09 million) for striker Rasmus Hojlund last summer, could be set to revamp their struggling squad following the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe as minority shareholder, although they also see the young Italian as a potential summer signing.
