The relationship between Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain is particularly strained at the moment, with the France captain announcing in February he would be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, most likely for Real Madrid. While the 25 year old will become a free agent in June, the two parties have indicated they would work together to reach an agreement to ensure PSG don’t take a huge financial hit when their all-time top scorer departs.

Mbappé substituted at half-time in Monaco vs PSG

On Friday, Mbappé was surprisingly substituted at half-time in the Ligue 1 draw away to Monaco. Reports later emerged that Luis Enrique and the attacker had had a private discussion on Saturday, in which the PSG head coach explained he didn’t feel his star player was on top form. The Spaniard also indicated, as he has done publicly, that he had to begin preparing for life after Mbappé but that he would only do so in Ligue 1 and not in the Champions League, which the Parisian side are still in with a chance of winning.

The Frenchman, it has been revealed, can’t understand why he has been taken off so early on in PSG’s last two matches, despite accepting Luis Enrique’s reasoning.

How much could PSG make from Mbappé “free” transfer to Madrid?

Last August, Mbappé promised to forego €80 million (around $86.7 million) in loyalty bonuses he is due from PSG, who now want him to make one last sacrifice. According to French newspaper L’Équipe, and confirmed by AS, the club’s Qatari bosses expect the forward to give up a percentage of the signing-on fee he receives from his next team, which seems almost certain to be Real Madrid.

As a result, PSG could make an additional €100 million ($108.5 million) to €150 million ($162.7 million) from Mbappé's departure, leaving them in a strong financial position despite not receiving an official transfer fee.

The fact Mbappé was substituted so early in the game in Monaco shouldn’t, in principle, affect negotiations related to his departure with PSG president Nasser Al Khelaïfi. Luis Enrique has sole responsibility for managing the player’s game time and won’t be dictated to by club management, who don’t want to punish Mbappé for outling his intention to leave.

PSG and the 2018 World Cup winner are expected to jointly announce a parting of ways, potentially in public at the Parc des Princes, most likely once the Ligue 1 leaders’ run in this season’s Champions League is over.
