At today’s 2024 Europa League final, Atalanta or Bayer Leverkusen will earn a bonus of just over $4 million for lifting Europe’s second-tier club trophy.

How much do the Europa League winners get?

According to figures published by UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, Atalanta and Leverkusen have already triggered a prize payout of €4.6 million ($5 million) each for reaching the showpiece event at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium. The winners of the final will then be paid a further €4 million ($4.3 million).

And this money comes on top of the prize cheques that the clubs began accruing the moment they entered the group stage in September.

UEFA gives the competition’s group-stage participants a ‘starting fee’ of €3.6 million ($3.9 million), plus a further €630,000 ($682,000) per win and €210,000 ($228,000) per draw in the round-robin phase. €1.1 million ($1.2 million) is allocated to each group winner, while the runners-up get €550,000 ($596,000) each. Last-16 qualification is worth another €1.2m, before clubs receive €1.8m for reaching the quarter-finals, and €2.8m for making the semi-finals.

How much UEL prize money have Atalanta and Leverkusen earned in 2023/24?

Having topped Group H with six wins out of six, Leverkusen have picked up the maximum amount of Europa League prize money so far. Xabi Alonso’s men have clocked up €18.88 million ($20.4 million), and will finish up with €22.88 million ($24.8 million) if they beat Atalanta in the Irish capital.

The Italians, meanwhile, won four and drew two games on their way to taking top spot in Group D. As a result, the men from Bergamo have earned €18.04 million ($19.5 million) as things stand, and can end up with €22.04 million ($23.9 million).

UEL winners also qualify for UCL place - but...

In addition to the prize money they earn directly from the tournament, the Europa League winners are also entitled to a ticket to the wildly lucrative Champions League, the continent’s elite club competition. Indeed, teams are set to be paid €15.9 million ($17.2 million) just for reaching the league phase of the revamped Champions League in 2024/25.

However, neither finalist will be making use of the Europa League’s Champions League allocation this year, as they have both already qualified for the tournament through their domestic leagues. Leverkusen secured one of the Bundesliga’s Champions League berths by lifting their first ever German title this season, and Atalanta can no longer finish lower than fifth in Serie A, which - like the German league - will have five representatives in next term’s tournament.
