Diego Lainez’s spell in Europe was not very successful, as he failed to get regular playing time with Real Betis and Sporting Braga. The young winger has returned to Mexican football, where he will wear the Tigres shirt and in doing so will become one of the highest-paid players in the national top flight.

Tigres are very close to announcing the signing of Lainez, making him one of the star signings in Liga MX for the Clausura 2023. He signed his pre-contract agreement on Friday, a one-year loan deal, which comes with a mandatory buyout clause from Real Betis. After the loan deal, it will turn into a permanent three-year deal for a total of $7 million, an amount that represents less than half of what América sold him to Real Betis for in 2019. Lainez will be earning close to two million pesos a month, making him the highest paid Mexican in Liga MX.

Pierre-Gignac a top earner

Lainez’s salary is still well below what some of his teammates earn: Guido Pizarro (1.8 million dollars per year / 3 million pesos per month) and André Pierre-Gignac (4.6 million dollars per year / 7.4 million pesos per month), who are among the highest paid of the squad.

On Monday morning, he will join his new club with fellow signings Fernando Gorriarán and Nicolás Ibáñez, who between them cost a total of $27 million.
