How much would it cost Barcelona to sack Xavi?
Handing the coach his marching orders would be a costly operation, as his coaching staff would also be eligible for compensation.
Xavi’s future at Barcelona remains very much in the balance. According to reports in local newspaper La Vanguardia on Tuesday, sacking Xavi and his team of coaching staff, who are under contract until June 2025, would cost the club around 15 million euros - half of that figure corresponds to what the coach would receive in severance pay.
Compensation for dismissal
For Barça, that is a considerable sum bearing in mind the entity’s current finances which is why directors and the commission are hoping that, as “a man of the club” as he has always claimed to be, Xavi will renounce his part of the compensation package, if the club decides to part ways, which would leave seven million euros to be dished out among the backroom staff. Seven men form part of the coach’s team, all of whom would need to compensated if Xavi is dismissed this season.
It’s been reported, included by us here at AS that sacking Xavi is not quite as straightforward as it my seem and any decision will have to bear in mind the economical impact as LaLiga also include coach’s salaries in their infamous salary cap. What is ruled out , apparently for now, is that the coach could offer to step down. Xavi has already commented on such a scenario.
So there’s no let up in tension at Barça which names are being bandied around as possibles successors to Xavi. Rafa Marquez and Hansi Flick appear as the main favorites, while Sport includes Thiago Motta - a former Barça player who has close links to muy vinculado a Deco. Other candidates include Roberto De Zerbi and Sergio Conceiçao.
According to official club sources, Xavi’s future won’t be resolved until after the final game of the season - against Sevilla at the Sánchez Pizjuán.
