Hugo Sánchez says the Mexico national team job “is made for me”

The Mexican held his hand up once again to take on the national team, who still does not have a manager for 2026.

There is still a vacancy at the Mexico manager’s office, and one of the many people who has raised their hand to take control is Hugo Sánchez. In his column for ESTO, the 5-time top scorer mentioned that he had the ideal profile for the project that is geared towards the 2026 World Cup, given that he is currently not working.

“I hope the directors don’t get things wrong again and appoint a foreign manager because they have to be Mexican. The ideal person doesn’t need someone that’s actively working, as you don’t need that to be a national team manager; the job is made for me, and especially so given the fact that there are no qualifiers and Mexico has already qualified with Canada and the USA, I would say the best person would be Hugo Sánchez, but with the 100% backing of the board, as I wanted back in the day and didn’t get”, he wrote.

“Just because a manager isn’t currently working doesn’t mean he’s not up to date, but if it is a requirement, I would accept the proposal of a club, if they want the same thing to happen again like when I was National Team coach and I had to say yes to Necaxa. I was there 4 or 5 months. They saw it as a necessary step, but now you don’t need to be working. I know there’s pressure, but I’m used to a lot of pressure and not everyone has that ability.”

Sánchez confused by Aguirre exclusion

At the same time, Sánchez pointed out that he wasn’t sure why Javi Aguirre hasn’t been among the candidates to take over the side. The Mexican is the current Mallorca manager and has experience in World Cup football. Sánchez sent a message to the board, asking them to at least make the manager a Mexican.

Hugo Sánchez played for both Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid.

“Now we can sat that the list is relatively short and they’re also leaving out the best Mexican manager of all-time, Javier Aguirre. El Vasco has a lot of experience, he’s an international manager who has worked a lot of years outside of Mexico. His maturity and experience would help him to do well in 2026. I don’t know why he’s not being considered.

I have a lot of references, but the person who influenced me the most was Luis Aragonés with his idea of being a champion, he was the first to do it in Spain and Europe. I wanted to do it with Mexico, but the board didn’t back me and didn’t let me. There is still time! If they’re going to choose a manager, whoever they choose, please let him be a Mexican, but I want them to know that the ideal person to take on the job is called Hugo Sánchez.”
