More Champions League action tomorrow!

That's all from today's game(s), but I have good news! There will be more Champions League action for you tomorrow, with Napoli hosting Barcelona and Porto taking on Arsenal.

When is the second leg of Atlético Madrid - Inter?

With just one goal separating the teams, this tie is far, far from over! The second leg in Madrid will be played on Wednesday 13 March.

That is going to be one heck of an occasion!

Nothing to separate PSV and Dortmund in today's other game

There was, of course, another game going on today, with PSV Eindhoven facing off against Borussia Dortmund in the Netherlands. 

My esteemed colleague Will was all over it, here's how that one went down. 

Inter 1-0 Atlético Madrid: what do the stats say?

2.34 expected goals for Inter, and Mark Arnautovic must've had about 2.3 of them. The Austrian missed two clear-cut chances after coming on but eventually made the breakthrough.

The Spaniards will have to up the ante in attack if they are to get back into this tie in the second leg.  

Atlético the architects of their own downfall

Atlético boss Diego Simeone will be pretty disappointed with that. They looked set for a 0-0, exactly what they wanted, until Reinaldo gifted the ball to Inter in the move that led to the only for after 79 minutes. That said, Inter definitely had the better of the chances.

Advantage Inter going into the second leg! Marko Arnautovic the match-winner, eventually...!

Excellent defender from Augusto as he stops not one but two Llorente crosses. 

Augusto goes in the book for a tactical foul on Correa. 

Atleti don't look to be going anywhere fast. Two minutes to go. 

We might get a little bit more injury time. 

A little break in play, as Frattesi goes down. 

Brute strength from Dumfries almost leads to a second for Inter, but his cross is cut out just in time by the visitors. 

Five minutes of injury time to be played. 

Almost a chance for Morata! Sommer gives the ball away carelessly but his defence bails him out, crowding the Atleti striker out before he can get a shot away. 

Inter change

Alexis Sánchez replaces Inter talisman Lautaro Martínez. 

Big chance for Morata!

That was Atleti's chance! Correa zips a ball into the back post, Morata gets his head on but the contact is too faint and the ball whistle wide!

A lovely ball in from Koke but it's brilliantly defended by Inter. 

Some old-fashioned wing play from Lino down the left and Atleti have a corner.

A decent chance for an Inter second! Lautaro breaks into the box and has Barella free in the middle, but his pass doesn't do his teammate any favours and Atleti can clear. 

Morata booked

Oh, dear. Morata and De Paul get in each other's way in midfield and the former then lashes out at Pavard. Yellow. 

Atleti's Savic sees yellow

Atleti have upped their intensity. That includes Stefan Savic, who has committed a number of fouls since coming on and sees yellow for this latest one. 

Griezmann off injured?

Literally a matter of seconds before the goal, Griezmann went off with what looked like an injury. Correa has replaced him. 

Lino fires inches wide!

Almost an immediate response from Atleti! Lino rifles a shot just wide from the edge of the box!

It's all going on now!

Lautaro header saved!

Lautaro got plenty on that! Another right-wing cross form Çalhanoglu goes right on the head of the Inter striker, but Oblak gets down to clutch his powerful header. 

The Inter fans seem to have found their voices again. 

Inter are on a charge! Çalhanoglu lines one up from the edge of the box and it looks promising before being blocked near the penalty spot!

Just over 15 minutes to go. Are we going to get a winner?

Inter go close!

A great break down the right from Dumfries ends with his firing low across goal. After a ricochet or two, it's cleared from almost on his own goal line by Savic!

Inter change

The latest in a line of 100 subs. Frattesi, replaces Mkhitaryan.

Reinildo tries to inject a bit of pace into the Atleti attack but overhits his cross, with Morata hoping for decent delivery into the box. Not this time. 

Another cross from the right from Barella and Arnautovic's eyes light up...Oblak claims.

Inter changes

Augusto and Dumfies are on for the hosts, Dimarco and Darmian have gone off.

Molina and Hermoso off, Reinildo and Barrios on. 

Inter have stormed back into this in the last couple of minutes. 

I'm not trying to pick on Arnautovic here, honestly...

Barella whips a brilliant cross in from the right...and it looks as if the Inter striker totally misses his header in front of goal. 

The classic don't-lean-back-when-you-shoot there from Arnautovic, kids. 

Arnautovic...over!

What a huge chance...again!

Arnautovic plays a brilliant one-two with Lautaro and has to score from seven yards out...but no! Over! Somehow!

Koke fires over

Morata's introduction has completely changed Atlético. A third effort in as many minutes, although Koke's strike might have landed on the roof at Milan Cathderal.

Griezmann swings the corner in, straight into the hands of Sommer. 

Llorente almost in for Atleti!

All of a sudden, Atleti are like a different team. Llorente, now breaking from deep, almost gets on the end of a through-ball, forcing De Vrij and Sommer to clatter into each other as they clear for a corner. 

Atlético's best chance!

A superb move from the visitors (out of nowhere)! Brilliant from Morata, who sweeps the ball out to Lino. The winger plays a give-and-go with De Paul and is clean through on goal, but he skews his finish badly wide.

Morata replaces Saúl, who's hardly been involved. Llorente, who has also hardly featured, will presumably drop into midfield now. 

Hermoso first in the book

The Atlético defender is booked for his troubles. 

For the second time in the game, Barella is down. This time after being clattered by Hermoso. 

Another chance for Arnautovic!

He should do better there! Barella curls a cross into Arnautovic, who gets his header horribly wrong. Again, he was in a good position there. 

It's all Inter at the start of the second half. They've upped the ante. 

Huge chance for Arnautovic!

What a move! A sweeping move down the left ends with Dimarco playing a superb cross to the back post for Arnautonvic, who blazes over from a great position! The best chance we've had!

Oblak is one relieved man. The ball loops up in the air from the corner, the Atleti keeper can't get to it but is judged to have been fouled by Pavard. 

Incredibly slack from Hermoso, Lautaro gets a little bit of pace in the box and wins a corner for the hosts. 

Not with crosses like that from Molina...

They're dropping like flies. Savic comes on for Giménez, who has also taken a bump of some sorts.

No Marcus Thuram for the second half! The Frenchman was struggling with a knock at the end of the first half. Marko Arnautonvic is his replacement.

Yeh, Kanye's the one in the middle, apparently. Did you recognise him? His undercover look still needs some work, clearly...

Inter 0-0 Atlético Madrid: half-time thoughts

Inter did most of the probing in the first half, although it was only in the last 10 minutes or so that it looked as if something might happen in the final third. Atleti, meanwhile, did well to frustrate their opponents and the home fans, patiently keeping the ball without ever threatening to score.

While Inter keeper Yann Sommer has had nothing to do, Jan Oblak has been a bit busier, especially at the end of the half. Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram have both given the Atleti stopper work to do as Inter slowly built some attacking momentum.

Not too much to shout about in the first half, especially from an Atleti point of view. Most of those eight Inter shots came right at the end of the half, they'll hope they can keep that momentum going after the break.

Inter the more likely in the first half

Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak had nothing to do in the first 30 minutes or so, although he was a little busier towards the end of the half. Nothing too strenuous, although Lautaro and Thuram both gave him some work to do.

Atlético Madrid will be happy with that, although there were a few hairy moments right at the end. 

One extra minute to be played. 

A little break in play as Thuram looks to be struggling. The way he's moving, he might not be back out for the second half.

Inter are finishing the stronger! Lautaro and Barella combine to tee up Thuram, whose shot from the edge of the box is on target but is held by Oblak. 

It's not happening for Atleti in attack. They've been very slack in the final third and not looked like breaking Inter down yet. 

Lautaro squanders Inter's best chance!

What chance for Inter! De Paul plays a horrendous free-kick and Thuram has the pace to get away from Witsel. The Frenchman squares it for Lautaro, who takes took long to get a shot away and it's deflected away for a corner.

Oh, mon Dieu. Atleti have a great chance to mount an attack, but Griezmann inexplicably passes straight out of play when Lino is just a few yards away .

The first effort on target! Barella whips in a right-wing cross for Lautaro, whose header is straight at Oblak!

A nervous moment for Giménez, who has to wait forever for a high ball to come down so he can head it back to Oblak. Lautaro is chasing the defender down, but he can't get there quickly enough. 

Atleti are in absolutely no hurry here when they have the ball. They're trying to frustrate Inter and they're doing it pretty well. 

Oh, my. What a pass from Çalhanoglu. I couldn't tell you how many yards/metres it was, but it was a lot. Right onto Bastoni's foot over on the left.

Thuram knocks a high ball down for Lautaro, who hits it first time but can't keep it down. Not far away though!

Atleti have done a pretty good job at quietening this home crowd. 

Dimarco coming into the game

We've hardly seen Dimarco for 25 minutes, but all of a sudden he's everywhere. Another cross into the box, another clearance by a green shirt. 

It looked for a moment as if Dimarco was about to get away down the left for Inter and he was in space, but the pass is intercepted before it reaches him.

Bastoni on the charge

Inter's back three charging forward from deep has been a key part of their strategy so far. No way through yet, thoiugh. 

Zinedine Barella, or Nicolò Zidane?

Take your pick! Barella pulls off a lovely 'Zidane roulette' in midfield, although he's fouled before he can make any more progress. 

We've seen some lovely touches from Lautaro outside the box, but Inter will be desperate for him to be more involved inside it. 

Good defensive shape from Atleti, who forced Inter all the way back to Sommer.

Hermoso...oh no!

For those of you who don't speak Spanish, 'hermoso' means beautiful, or lovely. That volley from Mario Hermoso was anything but. Throw-in to Inter. 

First Bastoni, then Pavard, now De Vrij! A brilliant layoff from Lautaro has Inter's third centre-back bearing down on the Atleti defence. He tries to feed the ball through to Thuram but the pass is intercepted. 

Inter's outside central defenders have been two of their biggest attacking threats so far! First it was Baston, now it's Pavard. The Frenchman crosses from the right but Witsel heads away. 

Bastoni again fancies going on the attack and clips a ball into the box, which is too far beyond both Lautaro and Thuram. 

A little injury scare for Inter as Barella needs to take a break. It looks like he'll carry on, but one to keep an eye on. 

Rather hopeful Inter shouts for a penalty as Martínez's strike cannons off Witsel and hits Molina, who can't do anything about it (and I'm not sure it hit his hand anyway). 

Lino shoots well wide

The ball works its way back to Lino, who makes space for a shot, which goes well wide. 

Here come Ateti! It's Lino down the left, he twists, turns and clips a cross up to the back post...to nobody

Ahhh, what a waste! Mkhitaryan leads the break away and has Bastoni racing down the left on his outside, but the midfielder plays a slack pass and the attack breaks down. 

Atleti struggling to get a foothold, Inter have come out the traps fast.

Why are Inter players wearing black armbands against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League?

You might've noticed a subtle flash of black at the bottom of Inter's sleeves, which is more noticeable on goalkeeper Yann Sommer. A touching tribute to the late Andreas Brehme. 

Excellent pressing from Inter has Atleti pinned in. And it's centre-back Bastoni who's up there closing Wistel down. What was he doing there?

Wistel takes a big risk, almost taking too long to swing a pass out to Hermoso. He just gets it away in time with Lautaro closing him down. 

First attack from Atleti! Molina gets forward down the right and has bodies to aim it, but he can't pick out a green shirt. 

All Inter so far! Oblak kicks the ball straight to Barella, whose cross from the right finds Thuram in the box. The striker's touch is heavy, though, and the chance has gone. 

The hosts play it short before Bastoni eventually clips it into Thuram, whose header is easily collected by Oblak. 

First free kick goes to Inter, and it's a chance to get the ball in the box. 

A good run forward from Darmian, who gets in behind and crosses, but Oblak collects with Lautaro a yard or two behind. 

Inter quickly wrestle possession from the visitors, who have dropped into a deep defensive shape.

Incredibly, these two have only ever met once in an official competition. Atleti defeated the Italians in the UEFA Super Cup in 2010.

It's safe to say it's LOUD at San Siro!

Atlético Madrid’s Champions League record

Atlético Madrid have been forced to watch on as bitter city rivals Real Madrid have dominated the European Cup/Champions League on two separate occasions (1950s and 2010s). To make matters worse, they have lost each of the three finals they have been in, and to add yet more insult to injury, they lost two of them against Los Blancos in heartbreaking fashion (in 2014 and that one in Milan in 2016, I’m sure you remember…).

Inter were one of the best teams in Europe in the 1960s, winning back-to-back European Cups in 1964 and 1965, as well as losing in the final in 1967. They had to wait 45 years until José Mourinho guided them to glory in 2010, with their final victory over Bayern Munich at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu coming after an infamous semi-final win against Barcelona, with the Portuguese up to no good, as he so often was back then. That season, Inter completed a domestic treble having also won Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

Last year, of course, they reached the final, where they were beaten by Manchester City.

Well, going by this video, even if their team doesn't get a positive result at San Siro, Atleti fans seem to be having a lovely time in Milan. Better than another recent visit in 2016, when they lost the Champions League final to bitter rivals Real Madrid in a penalty shootout.

Atleti, meanwhile, performed even better in their group, which they topped. Four wins and two draws saw them finish in first spot, and only Manchester City scored more goals in their six fixtures.

Inter in the 2023-24 Champions League group stage

Inter were unbeaten in their group but finished in second spot on goal difference after having an identical record to Real Sociedad. Both the Italians and the Spaniards qualified for the knockout rounds with two games to spare, which was a bit of an anti-climax…

Inzaghi and Simeone make history with Lazio

And you’ll never guess who Simeone played alongside in Rome? Yep, that’s right, today’s opposition manager Simone Inzaghi. In their first season together, the duo teamed up to help Lazio win Serie A for just the second time in their history, as well as their third Coppa Italia and second Italian Super Cup.

When Diego Simeone left Atlético for Inter

Over 13 years, 664 games, two LaLiga titles, two Europa Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, two Champions League final disappointments. At this point, Diego Pablo “Cholo” Simeoneis Atlético Madrid, but the Argentine once picked Inter over his current club.

After three seasons in the Spanish capital, Simeone swapped Atleti for the Nerazzuri in the summer of 1997, playing 84 games for Inter, with whom he won the UEFA Cup in 1998, before leaving for Lazio.

Atleti's Antoine Griezmann: the man who can do it all

Álvaro Morata, now Spain captain, is just one goal away from beating last year’s tally of 13 LaLiga goals and also needs two more to beat his own single-season record. But where would Atlético Madrid be without Antoine Griezmann? The Frenchman is just one behind Morata in the goalscoring charts and he became the club’s all-time top scorer earlier this season. But Griezmann’s game is about so much more than that, which we can only hope he shows once again today (unless you’re an Inter fan).

Hakan Çalhanoglu has been brilliant for Inter in a deeper midfield role this season but Lautaro Martínez has grabbed most of the headlines. The Argentine striker has scored 21 Serie A goals in each of his last two seasons and has already has 20 - in only 22 games - this time around, seven more than anyone else. Another six strikes between now and June will see him set a new personal record for goals in a season.

Atlético Madrid's patchy recent run

A Copa del Rey round of 16 victory over bitter rivals Real Madrid in mid-January had looked to have set Atleti up for a barnstorming second half of the season, as was the case last year. They won their next four games to make it five in a row, and then rescued a late draw at the Bernabéu in LaLiga. But things have hit the buffers a bit since then, with a first leg cup semi-final defeat to Athletic followed up by another scoreless loss to Sevilla. They did get back to winning ways in emphatic at the weekend by thrashing Las Palmas, but the wheels have come off somewhat.

Inter unstoppable on current form

How do you say “smoking hot” in italiano? Inter have won eight games in a row, and nine of their last 10.They’ve lost only one of their last 26 matches, and that was in the Coppa Italia. The Nerazzuri’s last Serie A loss came to Sassuolo all the way back at the end of September.

Whichever stats you look at it, there are Ws all over the place.

I can't confirm rumours clubs get kicked out the Champions League if they don't post a social media video of their jerseys in an otherwise empty dressing room before the game, but the speculation is strong. 

Inter in mourning for Brehme

The world of soccer was rocked earlier on Tuesday by the news that former Germany full-back Andreas Brehme had died of a heart attack at the age of just 63. Best known for scoring the winning goal in the 1990 World Cup final against Diego Maradona’s Argentina, Brehme spent four seasons with Inter between 1988 and 1992, winning Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup once each.

Atlético Madrid injury news

Long-term injury victims César Azpilicueta and Thomas Lemar are Atleti’s only absentees. 

As we said a couple of minutes ago, top scorer Álvaro Morata is only fit enough for a place on the bench because of an ankle knock.

Veteran defender (is there any other kind in Italy?) Francesco Acerbi misses out because of a calf problem, while Colombian winger-turned-wing-back Juan Cuadrado is still recovering from surgery on his Achilles tendon.

Second spot the best Atleti can hope for in LaLiga?

For a few weeks at the start of the season, it looked as if Atlético Madrid might be in with an outside chance for challenging Real Madrid and Barcelona for the LaLiga title. They are only three points behind Xavi’s side, but Barça have been poor…

Atleti are the only team to have beaten their city rivals in the league this season, but they are still 11 points behind Los Blancos, who looks odds-on to win the championship.

Inter lead the way in Serie A

Inter (that's them in orange, by the way) haven’t won Serie A in three years, but things are looking verypromising for them this time around. Simone Inzaghi’s side are nine points clear of second-placed Juventus…and have a game on hand on top of that!

Nothing can stop from them clinching their 20th top-flight scudetti, surely (no screenshots, please, just in case)?

Expected wins for Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, although there was an upset in Rome as Lazio saw off Bayern Munich, whose form has tumbled off a cliff.

When is kickoff between Inter and Atlético Madrid? 

You can probably hardly contain your excitement but you’re going to have to for an hour or so. The game in Italy gets underway at 9:00 p.m. local time, which is 3:00 p.m. ET and 12:00 p.m. PT. How about taking an extended lunch break for this one? It’ll be worth it, I (almost) promise!

Ding, ding, ding! Round two of the 2023-24 Champions League last 16 starts here! Four of the eight first legs were played last week, with the remaining four to be played today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday).

Welcome along to AS USA’s live text coverage as Inter Milan, last season’s beaten finalists, and three-times-the-bridesmaid-but-never-the-bride Atlético Madrid get their knockout campaigns underway at San Siro.
