Inter is just “a small step” from the final -Inzaghi

Inter Milan won the first leg of the Champions League semifinals over AC Milan 2-0. With a game left to play, Inter boss Simone Inzaghi says they are close.

Inter Milan is off to a good start in their quest for the Champions League trophy. After beating AC Milan 2-0 in the first leg of the semifinals on Wednesday, Inter boss Simone Inzaghi is pleased with how his side performed as well as confident heading into the next leg.

“We still have to take a small step”

Inter had an incredible first half performance that saw them go up 2-0 in the first half after just 11 minutes, with goals by Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. They maintained the lead the rest of the game. Though Inzaghi said he thought they should have actually scored even more, he said he was pleased with his players.

“I’m very satisfied. We had an extraordinary first half,” he said. “We could have scored more than two goals but it was a great display.”

There were indeed a few missed opportunities. Hakan Calhanoglu missed a shot that hit the post, plus there was a review of a challenge on Lautaro Martinez that resulted in a penalty award being overturned.

“We have to continue like this,” said Inzaghi. “We know that we’re just one step away from a dream that we believed in from August until today.”

Inzaghi says that now, that one step is a “small step” away from reaching the final, where they will play either Real Madrid or Manchester City.

“There are still six days to go,” he said. “We know we still have to take a small step.”

In the second leg, Rafael Leao will return to play for AC Milan, but Inzaghi said that won’t change their game plan. The second leg between Inter Milan and AC Milan will be on Tuesday, May 16 at 3 p.m. ET.
