After 17 unforgettable seasons at the top of world soccer, Sergio Busquets is hanging up his boots. The legendary midfielder, who debuted for Barcelona in September 2008 and later became a key figure for Spain’s World Cup–winning team, announced he will retire at the end of the current season.

Reports of his decision surfaced over the weekend, but later on Thursday the 36-year-old made it official in a heartfelt farewell video highlighting the moments that defined his career.

A master of the game from Barcelona to Miami

Busquets, affectionately known as “Busi,” captivated fans for nearly two decades with his flawless control and uncanny ability to dictate play. He spent the majority of his career with Barcelona, where he won countless trophies and became one of the most influential holding midfielders of his generation.

In his video, Busquets called Barcelona “the club of my life,” reflecting on the titles and memories at Camp Nou that shaped his journey. He joined the first team as a young prospect and quickly became a pillar of the team’s golden era alongside stars like Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernández, and Andrés Iniesta.

World Cup glory with Spain

Busquets also paid tribute to his years with the Spanish national team, where he won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2012 European Championship. “It was an honor to represent my country and to enjoy achievements that will forever remain in my heart,” he said, as clips of Spain’s historic triumphs played.

A final chapter in Miami

The Catalan midfielder closed out his career in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, joining former Barcelona teammates Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. Busquets thanked the club for giving him the chance to contribute to “a new and growing team,” noting the pride he felt assisting many of Messi’s goals in Fort Lauderdale.

His most recent appearance came Sunday against New York City FC, just weeks before his 37th birthday.

Gratitude to teammates, fans, and family

In his farewell message, Busquets expressed deep appreciation for the people who shared his journey. “Thank you to all my teammates, the staff, and everyone with whom I experienced so many beautiful and unforgettable moments,” he said. Addressing fans directly, he added, “I hope I was able to give back even a small part of what you’ve given me.”

Busquets credited his family as his greatest support and ended his message with an emotional “see you soon,” leaving the door open for future roles in the sport he defined for a generation.
