Inter Miami prevailed in an entertaining MLS clash against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place on Saturday, despite the absences of star men Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets, which caused no end of controversy.

Whitecaps fans unhappy at ticket prices for Messi no-show

As has become the norm around North America, the Whitecaps hiked up ticket prices for the game against The Herons, with tens of thousands of soccer fans eager to see the Argentinian World Cup winner - and his support acts - in the flesh.

It was, however, revealed on Thursday that Messi, Súarez and Busquets wouldn’t be travelling to Canada for the game, with the veteran former Barcelona trio left off the roster as Inter Miami look to manage their game time during their busy schedule.

The Whitecaps issued an official statement to their fans, apologetic in tone tone, writing: “Unfortunately, we have no control over who plays for our opponent”. They also revealed there would be a 50% discount on food and drinks at the game, with under-18s given a complimentary kids meal combo. But no refund.

What did Martino say about leaving Messi and Suárez out?

Speaking after the game, Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino addressed the issue, insisting his duty to do the best by his players, while at the same time acknowledging the situation was not ideal for anyone.

“Obviously, it’s a very important win for us because of the players we were missing. People had a certain expectation. I really don’t think I have to apologise, but in some way we are very sorry for not being able to come here with our stars, especially Messi. I know how passionate the fans are from my time managing Atlanta United”.

Messi to miss several weeks of MLS during 2024 Copa América

Inter Miami - and their opponents - will have to get used to Messi not being present, with the Argentina captain set to miss several weeks of action at the 2024 Copa América, which runs from 20 June to 14 July. Suárez could also be called up by Uruguay, while Diego Gómez, who didn’t play in Vancouver either, is expected to feature for Paraguay.

“Even without great players such as Leo, Luis, Busi and Diego, we competed really well,” Martino beamed. “That is the most valuable thing.”

The games continue to come thick and fast for Inter Miami, with two home games in quick succession coming right up (Atlanta United on Wednesday 26 May, St Louis City on Saturday 1 June). With Messi, Gómez and possibly Suárez heading off on international duty immediately afterwards, how will Martino opt to use them?
