As the global soccer world turns its attention to the final March FIFA window — the one that will award the last six spots for the World Cup — things look very different in the United States. In South Florida, Inter Miami is back on the training field, gearing up for a weekend that promises to be one of the most meaningful in club history.

The Fort Lauderdale–based squad returned to practice on Tuesday ahead of its matchup against Austin FC, a game that carries special weight for the reigning MLS champions. After years of anticipation, Inter Miami will finally open the doors to its brand‑new home: Nu Stadium.

This Saturday, April 4, at 8 p.m, Javier Mascherano’s team will step onto the field and make history. For the first time, Inter Miami will play an MLS match in a stadium built specifically for the club — a state‑of‑the‑art venue designed to usher in a new era.

The excitement around the home debut is palpable, especially for midfielder David Ruiz, one of Inter Miami’s true homegrown products. Raised in the club’s academy system, Ruiz now finds himself on the verge of participating in a milestone moment he once could only dream about.

“We’re excited. It’s an honor to be part of this, and it would be a huge honor to play in that first game at the new stadium,” Ruiz said Tuesday. “The goal is to win, win, and win.”

What does playing for Inter Miami mean to David Ruiz?

The Honduran‑American midfielder also reflected on his journey with Inter Miami — a club he joined from the very beginning, long before it became a powerhouse with trophies like the MLS Cup and Leagues Cup.

Back then, we didn’t have a professional club here in Miami. In Florida, it was just Orlando,” Ruiz explained. “To start something six or seven years ago and now be here — going from the academy to local teams to where I am today, with trophies and playing alongside the greatest player in history in my opinion, plus guys like Busi and Alba — it’s something I’m proud of.”

He added that he hopes his story inspires young players in South Florida. “I want to be living proof that whatever you want to achieve is possible. You just have to trust in God and keep moving forward.”
