Inter Miami sanctioned by Concacaf for controversy with Monterrey
The football association is sanctioning the club for a “lack of security” during the first leg of the Concachampions.
Inter Miami were beaten 2-1 by Monterrey last week in the CONCACAF Champions Cup the quarter-final tie. Tongues were wagging after Lionel Messi and Gerardo “Tata” Martino were reported to be involved in a heated exchange with the Rayados players coaching staff at full-time.
Prior to the return match in Monterrey, Concacaf announced that Inter Miami will receive a sanction for the incident.
“The Concacaf Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned Inter Miami (USA) for the incidents that occurred after their match of the first leg Quarterfinals of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup against CF Monterrey (MEX) on Wednesday, April 3, 2024″, they noted.
“After considering the documentation and evidence collected during its investigation, which included the request for written statements from both clubs and the exhaustive review of the reports submitted by the match officials, and based on the competition regulations and the Disciplinary Code applicable, the Disciplinary Committee has fined Inter Miami CF with an undisclosed amount for lack of security in its stadium”, they commented, without wanting to disclose the financial figure that those from Miami will have to pay.
“In addition, the Committee has warned Inter Miami CF that more severe sanctions could be adopted should incidents occur during their future matches in Concacaf club competitions,” they concluded in the statement.
