Inter Miami have confirmed that the club has acquired an additional 2024 International Roster Slot from D.C. United in exchange for defender Christopher McVey. The Herons will also receive up to $100,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) if McVey meets certain performance metrics.

The Swedish-American defender, who can play centrally or on the left, spent the past two seasons at Inter Miami after featuring for Swedish top-flight side IF Elfsborg and is Inter Miami’s second outbound center back of the offseason after they previously shipped Kamal Miller to Portland Timbers.

Chris has been a reliable, valued member of our squad since he joined the Club, playing every match in his first season and helping us make history in winning our first title last year. We’re thankful for his efforts at Inter Miami and wish him well in his future,” said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.

MLS teams get eight international roster slots per season, but these slots can be traded and clubs can play with more than the eight with 233 tradable international slots divided among the 29 clubs. The trading system also means that there is no limit on the number of international roster slots at each club, leading to Inter Miami’s latest dealings in the market.

Modric to Miami?

Inter Miami’s current squad already boasts the likes of Messi, Suárez, Busquets and Alba, but the addition of Croatian could be fundamental to strengthen the backbone of a team that will be competing on many fronts in 2024 (MLS, CONCACAF Champions League, Leagues Cup and the US Open Cup). Should Modrić not renew with Real Madrid, after playing in Euro 2024, a move to Inter Miami could now be on the cards for the midfield maestro.
