Inter Miami’s Germán Berterame under Mexico World Cup pressure as goal drought continues
After six scoreless appearances, the Inter Miami striker faces rising competition for Mexico’s World Cup roster and a critical stretch in MLS.

Inter Miami hit its first major setback of the season after crashing out in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16, a tournament that had been the top priority for head coach Javier Mascherano and the club’s leadership.
Owner Jorge Mas and the front office invested heavily in reinforcements, including Mexican striker Germán Berterame, brought in to help lead a new-look attack. Instead, the early exit has forced a reset, with the club now turning its full focus toward defending its MLS Cup title.
Miami’s Berterame yet to pay off
Berterame arrived as a cornerstone of Inter Miami’s attacking transition, expected to deliver goals in a season built around continental success. But his start has been anything but smooth.
The Argentine-born forward, who represents Mexico internationally, has yet to find the net. His struggles are beginning to draw scrutiny, both at club level and within the broader context of the Mexican national team picture.
With each passing game, questions are growing louder.
World Cup place under pressure
Berterame’s place in Mexico’s player pool is far from secure. A number of in-form forwards are making their case, tightening the competition for spots.
Armando “Hormiga” González is enjoying a strong run of form, while established names like Raúl Jiménez remain in the mix. Add to that the anticipated return of Santiago Giménez at AC Milan, and the battle for attacking roles in El Tri is becoming increasingly intense.
For Berterame, the timing of his slump could not be worse.
The numbers tell the story
Through six appearances to start the season, Berterame has logged 467 minutes without scoring. Since arriving in Fort Lauderdale, he has yet to open his account for Inter Miami.
For a striker brought in to make an immediate impact, the drought is hard to ignore.

What’s next for Berterame and Inter Miami?
Despite the slow start, Berterame will continue chasing his first goal, one that could spark the kind of scoring run needed to restore confidence and keep him in contention for Mexico’s World Cup roster.
His next opportunity comes Sunday on the road against New York City FC, currently leading the Eastern Conference. It presents a high-stakes stage for a potential breakthrough.
If the drought continues, another meaningful moment awaits. Inter Miami is set to debut its new home, Nu Stadium, against Austin on April 4, a date that could offer Berterame a fresh start in front of a home crowd.
For now, the pressure is on, and the clock is ticking.
