Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi calls out PSG for lack of recognition after Argentina’s 2022 World Cup win

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi hit the headlines on Wednesday after being forced off the field for a second match in succession in his team’s MLS win over Toronto FC. Less than 24 hours later, however, the ex-Barcelona playmaker was the star of an interview with Argentine actor and comedian Migue Granados on Spanish-language streaming channel Olga TV, where opened up about a number of topics, discussing different aspects of his personal life and some of his recents experiences in soccer.

One of the most eye-catching segments saw the Argentina captain asked about his two-year stay at Paris Saint-Germain, where he endured the most difficult times of his career and has previously admitted he didn’t feel especially at home.

Indeed, Messi claims that he will always remember his spell in France for the fact that he won the 2022 World Cup while he was a PSG player, rather than for anything he achieved at club level. The 36-year-old won two Ligue 1 titles in two seasons, as well as the Trophée des Champions (the French equivalent of a “Super Cup”), although the Parisians failed to progress beyond the round of 16 of the Champions League, which they were desperate to win.

“That’s how things worked out. If I’m honest, it didn’t go as I hoped it would. I always say that everything happens for a reason and although I say that I didn’t enjoy being there, I won the World Cup when I was there (at PSG). Everything happens for a reason and if that’s the way it had to be, I understood that later,” Messi told Granados.

Messi also revealed that he understood the animosity he received from fans in Paris after Argentina’s World Cup final victory, which came against the country he was living and playing his club soccer in. To emphasise that point even further, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner claims he was the only Albiceleste player who barely received any recognition from his employers.

“It’s understandable, I was living in the country we had beaten in the final, and they missed out on being world champions again because of us. I was the only World Cup winner who didn’t get any recognition (from his club) ”., he stated.
