After ending his scoring drought at the weekend, Feyenoord striker Santi Giménez says he’s “hungry” for more goals in the Champions League today, as he prepares to lead the line in a crunch clash against Atlético Madrid.

What do Feyenoord need to qualify for UCL last 16?

Feyenoord will qualify for the round of 16 if they beat Atlético, and Lazio fail to win against Celtic in Group E’s other matchday-five fixture.

However, Arne Slot’s men also know that they’ll be eliminated from the Champions League - and drop into the Europa League - if they lose to the group leaders and Lazio beat Celtic in Rome.

Among biggest games I’ve played - Giménez

It’s one of the most important games in my career,” Giménez said ahead of Atlético’s visit to Rotterdam. “We want to make the fans happy because they give everything to this club. It would be great if we could go through to the next round in the Champions League.”

Giménez, who missed Feyenoord’s matchday-one defeat in Madrid through suspension, added: “I wanted to play in the away game and I couldn’t, so now I have the feeling that I want to play a lot. I’m hungry.”

Thanks Feyenoord supporters after return to form

The 22-year-old, who is attracting interest from a host of major clubs, hit a hat-trick on Saturday as Feyenoord beat Excelsior 4-2 in the Dutch league.

“The hat-trick came because of [the Feyenoord fans],” he said post-match, “because they give me more energy, more power, and they make me trust in the next play, because I feel their support.”

Giménez’s treble halted a run of six games without netting for club and country, and took him to 18 goals in 15 Feyenoord appearances this term. The Mexico international now has 29 league goals this calendar year - one short of Luis Suárez’s Dutch record haul of 30.

In this season’s Champions League, he has so far scored two goals in two games.
