Former Real Madrid forward Isco and compatriot Borja Iglesias are the first two LaLiga players to condemn Luis Rubiales, President of the Spanish football federation, for his conduct at the Women’s World Cup final.

On Thursday it was announced that Rubiales is now the subject of a FIFA investigation for his actions after Spain won the trophy. He kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips and was seen grabbing his crotch in celebration while standing alongside the Spanish royal family.

Asked for his take on the incident, Isco said of Rubiales’ actions: “If it was not consented to, it is an abuse of power. I send all my support to Jenni.”

Isco has made 38 appearances for the Spain national team, scoring 12 goals.

Isco signed for LaLiga side Real Betis this summer and was speaking alongside new teammate Borja Iglesias. The Spain striker echoed his sentiment, sending his “encouragement and support” to Jenni and adding that her fellow professionals “are with her.”

Should Luis Rubiales be fired for the Jenni Hermoso kiss?

After initially dismissing critics as “idiots” it seems unlikely that Rubiales will voluntarily step down as the head of the RFEF. However in recent days there have been growing calls for him to be removed from the post.

When asked about the prospect of Rubiales being fired, Isco said: “I am not the one who should make that decision. I think it was wrong, it is something that under no circumstances should happen, especially not by the president of such an important federation.”

Speaking about Rubiales’s crotch-grabbing gestures, Isco said that it was unbecoming for the head of Spanish football.

“Likewise his behaviour in the box, next to the Queen... it’s not appropriate, really,” Isco added.
