Iván Alonso on board at Cruz Azul

Not even half a day has passed since Cruz Azul announced that Oscar Pérez had been officially dismissed from his post as Sports Director. Yet it appears that the Cementeros have already found a replacement - Uruguayan former player, Iván Alonso.

For several weeks there has been speculation about a possible restructuring of backroom staff - in particular, who might be brought in to look after squad planning. Numerous reports claim that Alonso, who spent a season in the Liga MX with Toluca has taken over the position.

According to journalist Adrián Esparza Oteo, the 44-year-old, who arrives with some question marks due to his previous work with Pachuca, has already signed with La Máquina and is just a few days away from starting work with his new employers for the Clausura 2024. All that remains is an official announcement from the club.

According to the same report, Alonso is due to arrive in Mexico City this weekend along with his personal team and will begin his duties as Sports Director on 1 December when the players return from vacation.

His predecessor remained part of the backroom staff from 2019, initially joining as goalkeeping coach. He left the capital club earlier this week and issued the following statement: “Azules, by mutual agreement, the club and I have decided that it was time to leave my duties as Sports Director of Cruz Azul. I thank the board of directors, the technical bodies, players and staff for all their support during my management.

“Now, a new stage of preparation and courses is about to begin, with the support of the club to perhaps, return in the future in a new capacity. And as they point out, it is not a goodbye, but a see you soon...” It will not be an easy task to replace one of the club’s big legends.
