James Rodríguez will not be in the squad for Rayo Vallecano’s Copa del Rey match against Racing Ferrol on Friday. The Colombian is suffering from a stomach virus that has prevented him from attending the team’s recent training sessions.

In parallel, there were unconfirmed rumours circulating claiming, that despite being ruled out of the Rayo squad, the player was set to appear at the Kings League World Cup Nations in Milan where Colombia are participating.

Since January 1, James has been free to negotiate his future and talk to potential suitors with it appearing clear that his immediate career lies away from Vallecas and Rayo.

“James has had a problem, like Pedro Díaz with a stomach virus during his vacation period. The club is aware of it and we are waiting for tests,” Rayo coach Pérez announced at the press conference prior to the Cup match.

Iñigo warns James

Once again, the Rayo Vallecano coach was forced to respond to a series of questions about the lack of playing time the Colombian is undergoing with the LaLiga side. He stated that, for him, no player has been relegated and that there is no news about movements in this winter market.

“Both James and others who believe they are not getting the right amount of minutes will have to speak to the club. I am delighted with the squad at the moment there is no planned movement in the market," added the coach.

He also reiterated that for him there are no “theoretical starters and substitutes” and the coach always considers the players best suited according to his game plan and as things stand it is evident that the Colombian does not fit in.

Any future decision made by the midfielder will be key to his first team action with the Colombia national team who are well placed to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.
