James Rodríguez’s next team confirmed…in the Kings League: when will he play?
Ex-Barcelona star Sergio Agüero has announced that the former Real Madrid playmaker will turn out in Gerard Piqué's Kings League.
While the Colombian national team is in Valencia in Spain preparing for upcoming friendly matches against Iraq and Germany on 16 and 20 June respectively, James Rodríguez, one of the country’s key performers for over a decade, still doesn’t know exactly what the future holds.
The former Real Madrid playmaker is a free agent after agreeing to terminate his contract with Greek club Olympiacos but has yet to find a new club. Until now...kind of.
What is the Kings League?
The Kings League, a seven-a-side soccer tournament based in Barcelona founded by ex-Blaugrana defender Gerard Piqué and Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos, has had huge success on platforms such as Twitch, YouTube and TikTok, with other soccer personalities and streamers taking part. The rules differ from traditional soccer, with fans able to vote on rules on social media, while teams are able to use ‘secret weapons’ such as obtaining a penalty or having an opposition player sent off for two minutes once in every match.
Shevchenko and Pirlo the Kings League’s latest stars
It was recently announced that Andriy Shevchenko would play for Ultimate Móstoles this coming weekend, hot on the heels of former Milan teammate Andrea Pirlo featuring for Jijantes FC. And in the After Kings review show, there was more speculation as to which former stars would be involved in future weeks, with fans having to guess based on a number of clues and options.
James Rodríguez to play for Sergio Agüero’s Kunisports
Colombian duo James and Radamel Falcao were among the names mentioned and former Barcelona and Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero, the chairman of Kunisports, confirmed that the former had agreed to feature for his team. “I spoke to James and he’s going to play for Kunisports. I’m announcing it now”. Agüero, however, didn’t reveal how many games the midfielder would play or when they would be.
In addition to Pirlo, Shevchenko and Agüero himself, other world-class stars such as Ronaldinho, Javier Hernández, Joan Capdevila and Iker Casillas, another team chairman, have also taken part.
Speculation has linked James with moves to clubs in Turkey, Brazil and Argentina but no move has as yet been agreed. In the meantime, he has been training at the Colombian Soccer Federation’s headquarters in Bogotá to ensure he stays in optimal physical condition before choosing his next destination.

Kings League matches are generally played every Sunday between 10:00 a.m. ET and 3:00 p.m. ET.
