América are the only club in Liga MX that does not have a coach with the start of the Apertura 2023 just weeks away. Fernando Ortíz left to join Rayados and left the Azulcremas with a serious problem. Javier Aguirre appeared as the ideal candidate to take the reins of the team, but it was ‘El Vasco’ himself who revealed what actually happened.

The Mexican coach was captured by ESPN at the Mexico City International Airport and made it clear that no one from América had contacted him: “They never spoke to me and that is the part that I can tell you. They never came into contact with me, were was no direct contact, nothing from any executive from América,” he explained.

He added, “My representative told me that Santiago Baños wanted to talk to him and some other coaches, I had practically everything done and closed with Mallorca, so I really don’t know if it was a matter of of time or I don’t know what. But when all of that was going on, during those couple of weeks when my name was being mentioned, they never contacted me. Everything happened later by which time I had already settled my future with Mallorca”.

The Azulcremas’ pre-season and planning for new signings has been complicated precisely because they do not have a coach. Two arrivals - Omar Campos and Kevin Álvarez are expected to be announced after the appointment of a new coach.
