On Saturday against Monterrey, Cruz Azul goalkeeper Jesús Corona played his 650th Liga MX game.

Corona is fifth in the all-time rankings in Mexican football and remains behind Óscar Pérez, also a former goalkeeper with Cruz Azul with 741 games, Oswaldo Sánchez with 725, Benjamin Galindo with 706 and Juan Pablo Rodríguez with 685 games.

The 41-year-old has had a 21-year career defending the colours of Atlas, Tecos and 12 years in the shirt of La Máquina Cementera, making him one of the legends of the Cementera club.

He came through the prolific Atlas youth academy before going on to make a name for himself domestically and internationally, with Copa Libertadores matches with Chivas in 2005, when they reached the semi-final stage before losing against Brazilian side Atlético Paranaense, after eliminating Boca Juniors.

Corona has played 435 games for Cruz Azul, 168 for Tecos and 47 for Atlas, the very club that saw him break into professional football.

Perhaps the only downside of his great career is that he has only managed to win a league title once, in the Clausura 2021, when they beat Santos de Torreón, their first title in 23 years.
