Chivas striker José Juan Macías has spoken on a podcast with London 2012 Olympic champion and former Chivas player Miguel Ponce about the obstacles that prevented him from moving to the Bundesliga to join Borussia Dortmund. “We were about to go to Dortmund, but as fate would have it, they decided to go for him [Haaland],” he said.

After competing with Erling Haaland to get a move to Borussia Dortmund, JJ Macías had more offers from Europe, until, in 2021, Chivas sent him to Getafe in Spain. “Before I left I had offers from Real Sociedad... I had offers from clubs with 3-year contracts, but the truth is, as it happens in Mexican football, they don’t let us leave, and that is why Mexican football is so screwed up.”

Return to Mexico

Macías was sold to Getafe in 2021 for €10million but it did not work out for him in LaLiga and he returned to Liga MX. Haaland eventually joined Dortmund in 2020, for €20million from Salzburg and has since become the best No 9 in the world.

Injuries have been a nightmare for Macías, however, he has recovered from a knee ligament rupture ahead of the new Liga MX season with Chivas and will be aiming to stay injury-free.
