José Juan Macías has endured a turbulent chapter in his career. Plagued by recurring injuries, the Mexican striker has fought hard to return to the pitch. After parting ways with Spain’s Real Valladolid, a new door has opened back home - this time with Pumas, offering him a second chance in Liga MX.

How close is Macías to joining Pumas?

According to ESPN, Macías has already completed his medical exams with the Mexico City-based club. All that remains is the signing of his contract, reportedly a one-year deal with an option for a second. If all goes well, the former international could be suiting up in Pumas’ iconic blue and gold for the foreseeable future.

Macías isn’t the only reinforcement Pumas are targeting in this transfer window, which closes in September. The club is actively scouting both a domestic winger and a foreign attacker, with their talent evaluators working overtime to bring fresh faces to Ciudad Universitaria.

A career hampered by injury

Injuries have been Macías’ toughest opponent. From a torn ACL to persistent muscle issues, physical setbacks have kept him sidelined and ultimately derailed his European ambitions. His stint with Getafe didn’t pan out, forcing a return to Mexico.

Back with Chivas, Macías struggled to regain form and was loaned to Santos Laguna. Limited playing time there led him to announce his retirement in February 2025. But just months later, he surprised fans by resurfacing with Valladolid on a trial basis. Despite his efforts, the Spanish club opted not to retain him.

Just when it seemed another retirement announcement was imminent, news broke of his move to Pumas - a glimmer of hope in what’s been a long, uphill battle. Since suffering his ACL injury, Macías has yet to reach his previous level, but this opportunity could mark the beginning of a long-awaited resurgence.
